Below are suggested activities that are related to Music Core Standards - Performing and Responding (Creating is coming). Please note this is NOT a curriculum. Feel free to modify the materials to meet your needs.

Demonstrate skills and competency levels in Performing.

Pr4.2: A. Perform music for a specific purpose with expression and technical accuracy.

  • GrK: Explore and demonstrate awareness of music contrasts in a variety of music. 
  • Gr1: Demonstrate knowledge of music concepts from a variety of cultures.
  • Gr2: Demonstrate knowledge of music concepts from a variety of cultures.
  • Gr3: Demonstrate understanding of the structure in music. 
  • Gr4: Demonstrate understanding of the structure and the elements of music.

Pr4.3: Enduring Understanding: Performers make interpretive decisions based on their understanding of context and expressive intent. 

  • GrK: Demonstrate awareness of expressive qualities that support creators' expressive intent.
  • Gr1: Demonstrate and describe music's expressive qualities. 
  • Gr2: Demonstrate understanding of expressive qualities and how creators use them to convey expressive intent.
  • Gr3: Demonstrate and describe how intent is conveyed through expressive qualities.
  • Gr4: Demonstrate and explain how intent is conveyed through interpretive decisions and expressive qualities.

Pr5.1: Enduring Understanding: To express their musical ideas, musicians analyze, evaluate, and refine their performance over time through openness to new ideas, persistence, and the application of appropriate criteria. 

  • GrK: With guidance, apply teacher and peer feedback to refine performances.
  • Gr1: With limited guidance, apply personal, teacher, and peer feedback to refine performances.
  • Gr2:. Apply established criteria to judge the accuracy, expressiveness, and effectiveness of performances. 
  • Gr3: Apply teacher‐provided and collaboratively‐developed criteria and feedback to evaluate accuracy of ensemble performances.
  • Gr4: Apply teacher‐provided and collaboratively‐developed criteria and feedback to evaluate accuracy and expressiveness of ensemble and personal performances.

Pr6.1: Enduring Understanding: Musicians judge performance based on criteria that vary across time, place, and cultures. The context and how a work is presented influence the audience response.

  • GrK: List, with guidance, personal interests and experiences that influence musical listening preferences.
  • Gr1: Identify/relate, with limited guidance, the influence of personal interests and experiences on musical listening preferences.
  • Gr2: Independently explain/interpret the influence of personal interests and experiences on musical listening preferences.
  • Gr3: Select music for listening and show connections to personal interests and/or personal experiences.
  • Gr4: Analyze music for listening which connects to personal interests, experiences, specific purposes, or contexts.

Re8.1: Enduring Understanding: Through their use of elements and structures of music, creators and performers provide clues to their expressive intent.
